Factories are always sending us prototypes.

Different wrappers. Different proportions. Different ideas rolled into tobacco, lit on fire, judged, and usually forgotten. Most never make it past the first few inches.

This one made the cut.

It is a thick 5 x 54 Robusto, finished with a traditional pigtail head and packed with the kind of rich Nicaraguan character that immediately gets your attention.

At the center of the blend is first-generation Corojo ’99, cultivated in Nicaragua under the direction of a Cuban master agronomist. The tobacco is grown in Jalapa, where the red earth carries an unmistakable resemblance to the great tobacco regions of Cuba—but with access to the agricultural resources and fertilizers Cuba no longer has.

The result is a bold, old-world Cuban flavor profile: rich Corojo, deep Nicaraguan filler, a subtle natural sweetness, caramel, roasted coffee, and a distinctive salty finish that stays on the palate long after the smoke leaves your mouth.

It is powerful without becoming crude. Rich without losing balance. The sort of cigar that makes you stop talking for a moment and pay attention to what is happening.

This is not a regular-production Padilla blend. There are no thousands of boxes waiting behind it. We are still experimenting with tobacco from this Cuban agronomist’s fields, and what I have smoked so far has been superb.

So I am releasing a small number at a price that is almost unreasonable:
